Alendronate (Fosamax) occurs as bisphosphonate drug used for the treatment of osteoporosis (see Maturitas 2004; 48: 179-192). Its patent is placed to expire around 2008 & Merck has lost the series of appeals to prevent the generic version of the drug from either existence qualified per United states FDA.
